Entrevista de l'ECOSY (Joventuts Socialistes Europees)

A continuació, reprodueixo l’entrevista que em va realitzar l’ECOSY en relació a diferents temes que he treballat al Parlament Europeu, com la formació al llarg de la vida, la comunicació i la igualtat de gènere, en vistes a les eleccions i a la propera legislatura.

Q: ECOSY in its Manifesto “9 deliverables for 2009 – Change for Europe” is demanding “Education and life long learning” to be accessible for all and provided publicly on high level. In your recent report on improving quality of teachers’ education you call for reinforcement of finances available for life long learning for teachers. Many would argue it is a dream in the times of financial crisis. What would you reply to them?

Maria Badia: First of all, it is important to realise that the quality of teaching is one key factor contributing to Europe’s job creation, competitiveness and growth potential in a globalised world. High quality teaching is a pre-requisite for high-quality education and training, which are in turn powerful determinants of Europe’s long-term competitiveness and capacity to create more jobs and growth in line with the Lisbon goals.

For these factors I believe that is not a dream but a social need to invest in education, and that means investing also in teachers, promoting teacher training, research within the teaching profession, as well as the status and recognition of the profession. Because of course, an investment in education means as well an investment for the recovery from the economic crisis.

Q:Your opinion on experience on Plan D emphasizes the role of the recent agreement “Communicating Europe in Partnership”. Eurostats and other statistics state that many young people are not planning to vote in the European Elections 2009. How can proper communicating from the EU side change this negative trend?

Maria Badia: As you said, I have worked a lot in communication policy of the EU, and I must say that it needs to be very much improved. The media are crucial, but the creation of new European media is not the clue; it is not, indeed. I think that the EU first needs to have a clear and understandable message of what it does, of the importance of the policies that it deals with, and of their impact in the lives of people, young people too. And to explain this hard work of the EU in the era of globalisation, and the multiple economic, social and environmental challenges we need to go local, to work in partnership with local and regional governments, media, civil society and so on. Economic, social and financial crisis, climate change and foreign affairs are some of the examples of policies that cannot yet be dealt at the national level.

Q: In the past mandate the Roadmap to Equality between Women and Men was adopted. Despite its two years existence, there are still as many as before obstacles and examples of discrimination, such as gender related pay discrimination. What measures should be a priority in the mandate 2009 – 2014 in order to implement the principle of equality faster and more efficiently?

Maria Badia: In order to implement the principle of equality in the next mandate, the most important measures to display would be to put into practice real and concrete conciliation measures between private and professional life and to eliminate the pay off gap of women in the labour market.
